The "cricket diplomacy"
Historically,
whenever India and Pakistan have gone through a period of tension, cricket has
come to the rescue. For example from 1961 to 1978, there were no diplomatic
relations between the two countries and the contact was reconnected with the
"Cricket Series" of 1978, a series of matches which introduced, in
the vocabulary of chancelleries, the "Cricket Diplomacy".
The most famous episode of this
sporting peace occurred in 1987. General Zial Ul Haq, President of the Republic
of Pakistan, unexpectedly invited himself to a match in India in Jaipur,
Rajasthan, India, while tension between Islamabad and New Delhi was at its
height, always about Kashmir.
At that
time, India had just launched large maneuvers, while Pakistan had alerted its
troops. There was fear of a return to open conflict, as in 1965 and 1971, but
the gesture of Zia Ul Haq prevented the worst.
